Driver Privacy Protection Act Notice

Under the federal Driver Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) of 1994, state Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) are prohibited from disclosing personal information—such as names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, medical and disability information, and photographs—unless the individual grants express consent. The law imposes additional restrictions on highly sensitive data (e.g., SSNs, medical/disability details, and driver photos).

Disclosure is only permitted under narrowly defined exceptions, including government or law enforcement functions, court proceedings, motor vehicle or driver safety or emissions programs, vehicle recalls, insurance underwriting and claims, verifications by employers for commercial driver licensing, and other statutory uses.
