Operation Lifesaver is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing collisions, injuries, and fatalities on and around railroad tracks and highway-rail grade crossings. Since 1972, it has provided free rail safety education programs to communities across the United States.
In the U.S., a person or vehicle is hit by a train approximately every three hours — a tragic reality that is often preventable through awareness and education.
Operation Lifesaver Delaware is now led by the Delaware Safety Council. Through partnerships with state agencies, local organizations, and rail operators, the program works to ensure residents understand the risks around railroad tracks and how to stay safe.
Our trained volunteers provide free rail safety presentations for schools, community groups, drivers, first responders, and businesses.
We participate in local events, fairs, and campaigns to spread awareness about rail safety and responsible decision-making near tracks.
Programs like “See Tracks? Think Train!” encourage safe behavior and help reduce preventable incidents across the state.
Trains can run on any track, in any direction, at any time. Stay alert and avoid distractions.
Never walk or drive on tracks outside of marked crossings. It is highly dangerous and illegal.
Trains take a mile or more to stop and cannot swerve. Never try to race a train to a crossing.
Help make Delaware safer by scheduling a presentation, becoming a volunteer, or sharing life-saving rail safety information.
